Right?
Right.
Sir Ken Robinson, an English author, speaker, and international advisor on education, discusses how the culture of education in America prevents itself from actually educating children. He introduces this mind blowing concept that ADHD might not be a condition that children have but more so that it’s just . . . childhood?
It’s a challenging thought.
Probably as challenging as how in hell is the education industry and it’s self defeating principles have anything to do with helping you enjoy exercise all the time.
Interestingly enough, there’s a parallel between the fitness industry and the education industry. They’re both outdated and are missing something that’s necessary to get better educated and get more fit – it’s engagement. Both of which environmental factors and relationship factors come into play.
The fitness industry today is filled with a lot of this:
“Dietary supplements to be skinny.”
“Performance enhancement to get jacked.”
“Run on a treadmill to look sexy.”
“Lift too much at the gym be big.”
But I’m not sure that that sounds that fun. Because really something that you do for yourself, even if it’s not necessarily something you’re extremely passionate about, doesn’t mean it has to suck.
One of the key philosophies that you should have towards fitness is that
- Something is always better than nothing
- Automate it to make it a habit
But other factors help in making sure that you can enjoy exercise all the time and make it easier to incorporate health into your life. This applies to education and even your career. Like:
- Relationships
- Environment
I’m fascinated that people who are able to control their finances, educate themselves, and are physically fit – are all correlated with success. It’s not a coincidence. The cool thing about fitness is it’s something that you’re in total control of, your body. And it eventually branches out to other aspects of your life, making you a more successful person.
A lot of your success in life is based on being healthy. And a lot of successful businessmen will attribute their success to their health. Here’s an article from Men’s Health featuring prominent business men and what they do for their health:
- Strauss Zilnick – former president of 20th Century Fox and BMG Entertainment
- Joe DeSena – serial entrepreneur and Cornell Alumni
- Wes Moore – TV personality and military bad ass
All these modern professionals understand that health is one of the most important things that they can do for themselves, their careers, and even their lives. And since you’re a modern professional yourself, it’s important that you do the same.
So today we’re going to go over how to enjoy exercise all the time:
- Engaging in Fitness
- Relationship and Environment Factors for Exercise
- 3 Tips you can do right now to enjoy exercise all the time
Engaging in Fitness
Penelope Trunk, career counselor and startup whiz, says following your passion is not good career advice. Some people might say that she doesn’t know what she is talking about. But I do, because I’ve applied it. What you really look for in a career is engagement. Something that keeps you interested and wanting more.
The same applies to the type of exercise that you do. When I hear someone tell me that they’re not looking forward to going to the gym and running on a treadmill it’s like, why are you doing it then?
So a big piece of the puzzle is actually finding out what type of exercise you like to engage in. For some that might be running a marathon, doing Crossfit, or hiking. Doesn’t matter what it is – just do it. That way you’re more likely to continue to do it, branch out into other activities, progressively getting fit and healthier in the process. This helps to better understand other factors that contribute to you enjoying exercise all the time.
Relationship and Environment Factors for Exercise
When someone says that they want to get fit or exercise, it’s almost immediately associated with the gym.
“I need to get in shape and get to the gym”.
Tell me what you have not heard that before.
If you say no, let’s be real . . .
You’re lying.
The reality is that going to the gym to get in shape is so far from the truth it’s not even funny. If you don’t like going to the gym, then don’t. You can still pick up heavy shit, go for a run, and do some cool ass calesthenics workout outside.
Yea, outside.
Like nature and shit.
On top of environmental assumptions of what makes someone fit, it’s the people that you associate yourself with as well.
In life, and in your career, you’re the average of the 5 people that you spend the most time with. And there is even a study done by the New England Journal of Medicine, cited in a New York Times article, showing that when a friend became obese you were 57% more likely to be obese as well.
Now, this isn’t a disclaimer to be like, “You’re fat and we can’t hang out anymore”. It’s more like, get yourself associate yourself with fit people if you want to be fit and healthier. You can help your friends get fit and healthier in the process.
Now, how are we getting in front of a more fit and healthy crowd?
3 Tips you can do right now to enjoy exercise all the time
Understanding the philosophy that health is correlated with personal, financial, and career success is super important. And being able to understand what you’re engaged in, who it’s with, and where it is going to help you to be consistent with those exercises.
A good example of engagement is me running.
Yes, me running.
I really don’t like to run. But l love playing basketball.
When I was younger I would wake up, eat breakfast, and then play basketball. Like the whole day. Everyday. It was my life. And I loved it. And it made conditioning and getting exercise so much easier because I was engaged in a sport instead of the actual act of running itself.
You can do the same. Just got to get out there and try different things. You’ll meet new people in the process who can help you to get in better shape and keep you on the path towards being consistent with your health too.
I’m not the only one by the way. It’s where the fitness industry and media are most likely headed.
Here are some ideas to get you rolling:
Check out Livingsocial – local fitness deals.
Check out Meetup – check out “fitness” or “health and well-being”
Enjoying exercise all the time comes down to doing activities you’re interested in, having fun with, and with people you’re cool with.
So get after it.
See you this Thursday.
As always, thanks for reading!
